Notes:
The final hybrid is Fords P2000, which I wanted to included because I think
its a good example of the compact packaging and light weight possible with a hybrid
powertrain. The car is smaller than a Taurus, has about the same interior space, and
weights just 906 kg, compared to 1503 for the 1997 Taurus GL. About 16 of these
hybrids will actually be built and tested, presumably with a diesel genset running at
about 44% efficiency. Ford expects up to 68 mpg in the city and 71 mpg on the highway from
what they call a Low Storage Requirementpowertrain.
So if we look some distance into the future, its easy to imagine a hybrid power
system that is even smaller and lighter than todays power systems - and perhaps even
less costly to build. A perfected hybrid vehicle could be three times more efficient
than todays cars, and virtually environmentally benign. Like todays
cars, the range of a hybrid built according to modern design practices is limited only by
the amount of fuel on board.
