I’ve divided the solution-options into three categories:

  • Technology Solutions
  • Design Solutions
  • Systems Solutions

Each of these categories includes a different set of options.  Today’s emphasis is mainly on technology solutions. But it’s doubtful that technology alone can solve the total problem. And energy demand and emissions are only part of it. In many of the world’s cities, the whole idea of private cars as a transportation system is on the verge of breaking down.

Technology Solutions include:

  • Battery-electric cars
  • Hybrid-electric cars
  • Fuel cell vehicles

We normally don’t think in terms of actual "design" - vehicle theme and personality - as having an impact on energy use. But it in so far as it affects peoples attitudes and choices, it actually does. So I’ll talk a little about new vehicle types and lifestyle appeals that could help reduce energy demand.

And there’s the idea of a systems approach to personal mobility. So I’ll talk about the idea of re-framing our concept of public transportation in terms of a doorstep-to-destination system - Station Cars and Personal Rapid Transit systems.
