The craggy rocks and pounding surf along the high cliffs below Route 1 lead visitors into the Monterey Bay area from the south. The relentless waves continue crashing to shore along the vast beaches around the peninsula and across the bay. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary offers a haven for the bountiful collection of wildlife, many of which are rare outside of the area. The damp winters and the constant presence of the ocean create an atmosphere for profuse displays of wildflowers. Low tide will provide the occasion for venturing a ways from shore to explore and photograph tide pools that flourish with life, and the flood tides will afford us the opportunity for daring seascapes that exhibit all the fury of the Pacific. Point Lobos State Reserve, Big Sur, Carmel, Julia Pfieffer Burns State Park with its wonderful waterfall, and Asilomar State Beach are only a few of the stirring locations we will visit. Sea lions, harbor seals (some with newborn pups this time of year), and sea otters will be among the ocean going wildlife we attempt to “capture” with our cameras. We will also visit an annual elephant seal location on the coast. Textures and color will also be explored in detail while visiting Steinbeck’s Cannery Row, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Carmel Mission or other historical sites around Monterey Bay. Roger has been visiting Monterey for over ten years, leading workshops in Monterey for ten years and knows all the right places to make this an outstanding experience. This workshop is an "unknown" secret filled with photography opportunities.
