RTT has found a way to show you the city of Heidelberg from two perspectives.
The first is the thoroughly modern funicular railway, which climbs from the
valley level at the Neckar River to the Heidelberg Castle grounds. The
split-level cars offer splendid views over the city and the surrounding river
valley. The second, and more unusual perspective, is the historic and
city-oriented scavenger hunt!
Travel directly to the Old Town center of Heidelberg and take a short walk to
the Kornmarkt, departure point for the newest funicular railway in all of
Germany. From there, experience the ascent at a rate of 4 meters per second as
views of the city and Neckar River valley spread out below. Once at the castle
grounds, use your admission ticket (included) to peruse the historic Pharmacy
Museum or the world’s biggest wine vat in the castle cellar. With a capacity of
over 55 thousand gallons of wine, this barrel is an impressive sight! A
monumental dimension is added to the castle gardens while strolling on the
“Great Terrace” and enjoying the wonderful castle views with the river below.
This is a photographer’s delight!
Descend to the Kornmarkt with the funicular (again enjoying the views) and meet
up for the Scavenger Hunt. Divide into teams to
conquer the challenge! The hunt takes place on foot, through many of
Heidelberg’s small alleyways and squares. A map and questionnaire will lead to
unexpected facts and delightful aspects of the Old Town. Winners are awarded a
small gift of the city and receive a certificate.
Round out the experience of Heidelberg with free time to explore the sites and
enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants in the city center.
With pleasant memories of Heidelberg, depart by bus to
return to Ramstein Air Base. Return to the point of origin at approximately
