CLAL President Receives AIPAC’s Advocate Of The Year Award

Recognizes Accomplishments on Behalf of the U.S.-Israel Relationship on Campus

By Judy Epstein, Director of Public Affairs

Acknowledging CLAL’s longstanding relationship with AIPAC, and its influence in shaping a new generation of Jewish leaders on college campuses, AIPAC bestowed its prestigious 2004 Advocate of the Year Award to Rabbi Irwin Kula, CLAL President.   Conferring the award at the AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington, DC was AIPAC Leadership Development Director Jonathan Kessler.

In his remarks the night before, AIPAC Board of Directors Member Herbert Katz said that CLAL had helped define one of the most significant aspects of AIPAC’s work: the transition from Jewish powerlessness to empowerment.  He also credited CLAL with providing the theological and ideological guidepost for the expansion of AIPAC’s vision and mandate on campus.

The award recognizes Rabbi Irwin Kula’s participation with AIPAC over the years, where he has worked directly with hundreds of student advocates in addition to presenting the keynote address at AIPAC’s national summit in Arizona last fall.  Promoting the vision of Jewish unity while embracing diversity of opinion, Rabbi Kula was cited as helping AIPAC broaden its base on campus and encouraging activists to find their own voice in their love and support of Israel.

“It is incredibly satisfying to receive this award from AIPAC,” said Rabbi Kula. “The acknowledgment that a variety of expressions and opinions can actually attract people to support Israel is significant.  It affirms that many voices can encourage our campus constituents, and that love and loyalty to the State of Israel can take many forms.  Rather than detracting, diversity can encourage young people to deepen their views.”
