The Wisdom of Yearnings: Jewish Insight Offers New Way to “Dance With Uncertainty” and Find Joy

Public Television Special Taping in Chicago, Wednesday, April 26, 2006, Featuring Noted Scholar and Speaker Irwin Kula

By Judy Epstein, Director of Public Affairs

Our everyday lives are driven by deep and profound yearnings - our desires for creative work, a successful career, financial security, purposeful retirement, passionate personal relationships, spiritual fulfillment and many more.  Yet, often we feel disappointed and let down when we don’t achieve them.

Irwin Kula, a nationally recognized spiritual leader, tells us that when we can understand these wants – how they function in our lives, motivate us, and why we feel discouraged when we don’t “get” them – we gain a perspective and deeper self-awareness that actually transforms these hungers into personal, positive energy and joy. We learn how to constructively open ourselves to our most passionate yearnings and desires. Using stories from Jewish wisdom, he creates the tools for this exciting exploration and transformation.

On April 26, 2006, in his only Chicago area appearance, Irwin Kula will star in an exclusive videotaping for an upcoming Public Television special to air in December 2006.  Offering insights and lessons in a program entitled The Wisdom of Yearnings, based on observations from his forthcoming book, Yearnings: Embracing the Sacred Messiness of Life (Hyperion, September 2006), he will appear before a live audience.

The taping, produced by JTN Productions, will take place at 7:30 pm at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts, 9501 Skokie Blvd., in Skokie, Illinois.  It is free and open to the public.  For tickets, call 847-673- 6300 or go online at www.northshorecenter.org.  A per ticket handling charge will apply.

Irwin Kula is a rabbi and President of CLAL-The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, a think tank, leadership training institute and resource center focusing on the role of religion in America.  Called one of the leading spiritual figures to watch by Fast Company Magazine and PBS-TV’s Religion and Ethics Newsweekly, he is the co-editor of The Book of Jewish Sacred Practices, and host of public TV’s “Simple Wisdom with Irwin Kula.”

A leader in TV programming for over 25 years, JTN productions is an independent, non-profit TV production company developing and producing award-winning programming that reflects Judeo-Christian values and Jewish sensibility.
