In the fall of 2007, building
Catholic-Jewish relations, Rabbi Tsvi Blanchard, Ph.D., CLAL's Director of
Organizational Development,
joined a delegation of five American bishops and two rabbis, including CLAL founder Rabbi Irving "Yitz" Greenberg, to Rome for
a private
meeting with Pope Benedict XVI. His Holiness emphasized the importance of social solidarity — whereby each is responsible for the other,
a value shared by both traditions —
as a message that must be spread. While overseas, the group also went to Poland to tour Auschwitz,
to further sensitize the bishops on Jewish issues and help them understand
where the two traditions differ in their points of view.
The two-part trip was sponsored by the prestigious Center for Christian-Jewish Understanding.
